Using Budgets as "Envelopes"

We recently finalized our settings in our Mint account, and then found the Mint app for iPhone. We would like to use Mint as an Envelope system to manage our spending. However, it seems that Mint somewhat restricts the naming of budgets and is allocating funds to various budget names that we would not use / are not specific enough for us to manage our spending. Has anyone used Mint as an envelope system, and how did you get it to work best for you? If we can't get this to work this way, we'll probably use a free envelope app and leave Mint...


I, too, have used envelopes, and I appreciate the idea behind them.  My only issue is keeping so much cash around -it's easily lost.  Then I have to manually enter my spending into Mint or a spreadsheet to see things categorized.  I'm using Mint now, and had this same question.  I found this other user who arranged things this way:

Basically, using tags and expense accounts to make virtual envelopes.  The author called their envelopes "buckets" and made a "bucket" tag for each envelope.

I'm going to give it a try, it looks promising.  Can't hurt, right?

People come to Mint for help and answers—we want to let them know that we're here to listen and share our knowledge. We do that with the style and format of our responses. Here are five guidelines:

  4. Be a good listener. When people post very general questions, take a second to try to understand what they're really looking for. Then, provide a response that guides them to the best possible outcome.
  5. Be encouraging and positive. Look for ways to eliminate uncertainty by anticipating people's concerns. Make it apparent that we really like helping them achieve positive outcomes.
