My USAA account has recently stopped updating on Mint. This appears to be a problem with the way Mint handles USAA's multi-factor authentication after a recent update.

There seems to be a problem as the account is updating and Mint displays the "Multi-factor authentication" window where you select the phone to receive USAA's authentication code. The step to select the phone to receive the authentication code is on the same view as the field in which to enter the authentication code. In other words, you cannot submit the request to receive the code from USAA before Mint asks for the code. It appears the field in which to enter the authentication code has recently been moved incorrectly to this screen. This was working fine last week.

Hi leemcaldwell,

The error code being returned for your account indicates that you need to provide additional login information such as an answer to a security question or an access code.  This is known as Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) and is usually required by banks the first time you log in from an unrecognized computer.

Many banks that use secret questions/answers require that you provide answers to multiple questions.  Each time you access your account you may only be prompted for one question.  When Mint tries to access your account on your behalf, your bank may also prompt for answers to the questions you set up.

We need to identify the specific reason causing the error before we can determine how to resolve it. Please take the steps below and let us know if it resolves the issue:

1. Click the "Edit Login" button.

2. Enter your log in credentials when prompted.

3. Provide the answer to the additional authentication such as security questions, OTP, CAPTCHA and image passphrase.

4. If you have set up more than one security question or MFA, please wait for approximately 15-30 minutes and then refresh your account again. Each time you initiate a refresh, a new security question/MFA should be presented (stored or not).

5. If you were not prompted to answer any additional authentication, please try to log in to using another computer to trigger the MFA.

If you are unsure what the correct MFA answers are, please contact your bank or financial institution. They will assist you in recovering your responses or creating new ones.

Please reply to this email with the information below if you continue to experience issues with your account after answering all additional security authentication, such as security questions set up on the bank site, so we can investigate further.

People come to Mint for help and answers—we want to let them know that we're here to listen and share our knowledge. We do that with the style and format of our responses. Here are five guidelines:

  1. Keep it conversational. When answering questions, write like you speak. Imagine you're explaining something to a trusted friend, using simple, everyday language. Avoid jargon and technical terms when possible. When no other word will do, explain technical terms in plain English.
  2. Be clear and state the answer right up front. Ask yourself what specific information the person really needs and then provide it. Stick to the topic and avoid unnecessary details. Break information down into a numbered or bulleted list and highlight the most important details in bold.
  3. Be concise. Aim for no more than two short sentences in a paragraph, and try to keep paragraphs to two lines. A wall of text can look intimidating and many won't read it, so break it up. It's okay to link to other resources for more details, but avoid giving answers that contain little more than a link.
  4. Be a good listener. When people post very general questions, take a second to try to understand what they're really looking for. Then, provide a response that guides them to the best possible outcome.
  5. Be encouraging and positive. Look for ways to eliminate uncertainty by anticipating people's concerns. Make it apparent that we really like helping them achieve positive outcomes.
